Camp Hill, Hampden, Silver Spring Awarded Recycling Grants, Vance Says

HARRISBURG – State grants totaling more than $240,000 recently were awarded to Camp Hill Borough and Hampden and Silver Spring townships under the Recycling Performance Grant Program, said Sen.-Elect Patricia Vance (R-Cumberland/York).

"Recycling is an easy way to protect the environment for years to come," Vance said. "I commend residents of these areas for their efforts to dispose of their waste in the most environmentally friendly way."

Grants are based on the total tons recycled and the municipality's overall recycling rate for calendar year 2003. Camp Hill was awarded $50,318. Hampden Township received $142,349, and Silver Spring was awarded $51,992.

The Recycling Performance Grant Program provides an incentive to help Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and exceed the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. This grant is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs.

Through September of each year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycling the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs.

Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
