Municipalities, Counties Awarded Recycling Grants, Vance Says

HARRISBURG – More than $1.75 million in Recycling Development and Implementation grants recently were awarded to Cumberland County municipalities and Cumberland and York counties, announced Sen. Patricia Vance (R-Cumberland/York).

"It is encouraging that municipalities and Cumberland and York counties are taking steps to improve recycling opportunities," Vance said. "Recycling conserves the world's natural resources and reduces the need for landfills and other disposal facilities thus allowing land to be used in other ways."

The Recycling Development and Implementation Grant Program reimburses municipalities and counties for 90 percent of the costs of recycling and composting programs. With monies received, municipalities and counties are able to establish recycling programs, purchase supplies and materials, and conduct environmental education.

Mechanicsburg was awarded a $2,699 grant to establish recycling opportunities at public events. The borough also was awarded a $497,301 grant to create a compost facility for the borough and Silver Spring Township. Camp Hill received a $105,620 grant to enhance the borough's leaf waste recycling program. A $360,810 grant was awarded to Shippensburg Borough to improve the borough's existing Department of Environmental Protection approved composing facility.

South Middleton Township received a $1,757 grant to conduct a recycling education program in the township. Upper Allen Township was awarded a $39,888 grant to enhance the township's leaf waste collection program. Cumberland County received a $500,000 grant to establish a county drop-off recycling center. York County Solid Waste Authority was awarded a $244,786 grant to support local government curbside recycling programs throughout the county.

Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
