FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Five Cumberland County Municipalities Awarded Recycling Grants, Vance AnnouncesHARRISBURG – More than $64,500 in Recycling Performance Grants recently were awarded to five municipalities in Cumberland County, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York). "The residents of each of these townships and boroughs should be proud of their efforts to reduce trash in landfills," Vance said. "I would hope their diligence will encourage all residents in the 31st Senatorial District to increase recycling. Not only does it help the environment, but it also results in grants to local governments." The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality's overall recycling rate for calendar year 2004. Lower Allen Township was awarded $28,981 based on 2,509 tons recycles. Upper Allen Township received $19,921 based on 1,286 tons recycled. Monroe Township was awarded $11,038 for 597 tons recycled. Mt. Holly Spring Borough received $4,694 for 233 tons while Shiremanstown received $39 for seven tons recycles. This grant helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. It is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs. Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County. |
