FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Four Cumberland County Municipalities Awarded Recycling Grants, Vance AnnouncesHARRISBURG – More than $150,000 in Recycling Performance Grants recently were awarded to four municipalities in Cumberland County, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York). "It is obvious residents of these four municipalities are committed to recycling by the amount of items they recycled in 2004," Vance said. "Recycling not only helps the environment but also results in additional funding for local government through this grant program. I would encourage all residents to follow the lead of these three townships and one borough." The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality's overall recycling rate for calendar year 2004. Wormleysburg Borough was awarded $2,855 based on 197 tons recycled. South Middleton Township received $64,000 based on 2,819 tons recycled. Silver Spring Township was awarded $38,640 for 2,182 tons recycled while East Pennsboro Township received $44,777 for 2,485 tons recycled. This grant helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. It is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs. Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County. |
