Vance Announces Four Environmental Grants

HARRISBURG – Almost $24,000 in Department of Environmental Protection grants recently were awarded in Cumberland and York counties, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York.

"These grants are vital to protecting the environment for years to come," Vance said. "The Recycling Performance Grants encourage municipalities to increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. The Sewage Facilities Enforcement Grant Program reimburses municipalities for eligible expenses."

Cumberland County was awarded a $1,139 Recycling Performance Grant based on 222 tons recycled. Carroll Township received $19,122 based on 760 tons recycled. The grant is based on total tons recycled, and the municipality's overall recycling rate for calendar year 2004.

This grant is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs.

Penn Township received a $1,346 Sewage Facilities Enforcement Grant, and Franklin Township was awarded a $3,287 grant under the same program. Sewage Facilities Enforcement Grants are used to reimburse 50 percent of the eligible expenses for performing state sewage regulations. The regulations are outlined in the Pennsylvania Sewage Facilities Act (Act 537). This act was formed to correct existing sewage disposal problems and prevent future problems through proper planning of all types of sewage facilities and permitting of individual or community onlot disposable systems (OLDS), as well as uniform standards for designing OLDS.

Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
