FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Cumberland County Solid Waste Authority Awarded Grants, Vance SaysHARRISBURG – More than $19,000 in Small Business and Household Pollution Prevention Grants recently were awarded to Cumberland County for two collection events held last fall at Big Spring Middle School in Newville, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York). "Since Household Hazardous Waste events began in Cumberland County in 1998, 516 tons of household hazardous waste have been collected," Vance said. "Participants in the Computer and Electronics Recycling Days have dropped off a total of 522 tons since the events beginning in 2001. It is obvious these events are highly popular with county residents and have prevented improper disposal of hazardous items that can damage the environment." The grants will be used to reimburse 50 percent of the costs for developing and operating a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event and a Computer and Electronics Recycling Day at the school. The events were held Sept. 23, 2006, and Oct. 14, 2006, respectively. Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County. |
