FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE North Middleton, Franklintown Awarded Recycling Grants, Vance SaysHARRISBURG – More than $19,000 in Recycling Performance Grants recently were awarded to North Middleton Township and Franklintown borough, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York). "Recycling not only reduces trash in landfills but also saves energy," Vance said. "By recycling aluminum, 95 percent less energy is used compared to producing new aluminum from raw materials. In addition, recycling a glass jar saves enough energy to light a 100 watt light bulb for five hours." The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality's overall recycling rate for calendar year 2005. North Middleton Township was awarded $18,707 based on 1,048 tons recycled. Franklintown Borough received $469 based on 35 tons recycled. This grant helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. It is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs. Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County. |
