FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Vance Introduces Legislation to License Assisted Living FacilitiesHARRISBURG – A new type of license for assisted living facilities would be created under legislation recently introduced by Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York). Under current law, facilities offering long term care services are either licensed as personal care homes or nursing homes. With a few exceptions, personal care homes are permitted to admit residents who require personal care services, but not health care services. Nursing homes serve the other end of the spectrum and provide care for the most vulnerable of the population. Senate Bill 704 would create an entity called assisted living that would allow for a level of care between the two existing entities. "Assisted living facilities will serve an important niche for those who want to live as independently as possible but have greater health care needs that need to be met," Vance said. "The creation of an assisted living license will allow individuals to age in place and expand consumer choice. In addition, by clearly defining the level of care that residents can expect to receive, it will ensure that consumers understand the limitations of a specific facility and that those caring for residents are trained to address the residents' specific needs." Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County. |
