FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Three Municipalities Awarded Recycling Grants, Vance SaysHARRISBURG – More than $80,000 in Recycling Performance Grants recently were awarded to Middlesex and Lower Allen townships and Mechanicsburg Borough, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York). "It is amazing how much energy and natural resources can be saved through recycling," Vance said. "Recycling one aluminum can save enough energy to run a television for three hours. In addition, if every American recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, about 25 million trees would be preserved every year." The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality's overall recycling rate for calendar year 2005. Mechanicsburg Borough was awarded $31,842 based on 2,107 tons recycled. Lower Allen Township received $30,289 based on 2,744 tons recycled. Middlesex Township was awarded $20,633 based on 1,130 tons recycled. This grant helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. It is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs. Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County. |
