Pennsylvania American Water to Change its Disinfection Process, Vance Says

HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania American Water will switch its disinfection process for customers on the West Shore beginning the week of Aug. 12, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York).

This change from chlorine to chloramines will necessitate the attention of two groups of people – kidney dialysis patients and fish owners. Chloramines must be removed from water used in kidney dialysis and water used in fish tanks and ponds.

"The water can be used for drinking, cooking, bathing and all other customary uses, the same as chlorinated water," Vance said. "Although, this will not modify water usage for most customers, it is important that everyone is aware of the change."

The change will affect customers in Camp Hill, East Pennsboro, Enola, Fairview, Hampden, Lemoyne, Lower Allen, Newberry, New Cumberland, New Kingstown, Shiremanstown, Silver Spring, Upper Allen, West Fairview and Wormleysburg.

Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
