Grants Awarded to Two Schools, Vance Says

HARRISBURG – Almost $6,000 in Environmental Education Grants recently were awarded to South Middleton School District and Cumberland Perry Area Vocational Technical School, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York).

"By educating our children and cultivating their curiosity in the environment, we are preparing the next generation to be good stewards of Mother Earth," Vance said. "I commend the administrators and teachers of these schools for creating hands-on environmental programs. Learning through doing is a good supplement for textbook information."

South Middleton Township School District received a $1,997 grant to develop and create a demonstration garden at the Yellow Breeches Middle School, which will give students hands-on lessons with plants and wildlife. Cumberland Perry Area Vocational Technical School received a $2,000 grant for Automotive Collision Technology Program students to convert an existing vehicle into a hybrid vehicle. A generator using biodiesel fuel will recharge the batteries from which the electric motor draws its power. Comparison testing and studies will be done to measure emissions and fuel usage. The vo-tech received a second $2,000 grant to collect vegetable oil to make biodiesel to be tested afterward for fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions.

The Environmental Education Grant Program supports environmental education through schools, county conservation districts and other nonprofit conservation or educational organizations, including colleges and universities. Five percent of pollution fines and penalties collected annually by the Department of Environmental Protection go towards environmental education in Pennsylvania.

Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
