Numerous Recycling Grants Awarded in Area, Vance Says

The quick brown foxHARRISBURG – More than $225,000 in Recycling Performance Grants recently were awarded to seven entities in Cumberland County and four municipalities in York County, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York).

"Through recycling, residents in Cumberland and York counties have shown their commitment to protecting the environment," Vance said. "The large tons of materials recycled are quite impressive. I encourage people to keep up their efforts and challenge them to increase the amount of waste they recycle."

The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality’s population for calendar year 2005. The grants were awarded to:

  • Cumberland County, 236 tons recycled, $1,211 grant
  • Camp Hill Borough, 1,348 tons recycled, $27,044 grant
  • East Pennsboro Township, 2,771 tons recycled, $56,684 grant
  • Monroe Township, 560 tons recycled, $9,895 grant
  • Silver Spring Township, 2,357 tons recycled, $37,475 grant
  • South Middleton Township, 3,899 tons recycled, $65,092 grant
  • Wormleysburg Borough, 191 tons recycled, $2,700 grant
  • Carroll Township, 807 tons recycled, $21,315 grant
  • Dillsburg Borough, 171 tons recycled, $2,624 grant
  • Warrington Township, 187 tons recycled, $1,916 grant
  • Wellsville Borough, 36 tons recycled, $753 grant

This grant helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. It is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs.

Vance’s district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
