Vance Announces Boroughs Awarded Recycling Grants

HARRISBURG – Almost $80,000 in Recycling Performance Grants recently were awarded to Carlisle and Shippensburg boroughs, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York).

"These recycling grants reward and encourage municipalities and their residents to recycle," Vance said. "According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American citizen produced more than 1,600 pounds of trash in 2000. Every item recycled reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills."

The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality's overall recycling rate for calendar year 2005. Carlisle Borough was awarded $55,448 based on 4,120 tons recycled. Shippensburg Borough received $20,712 based on 833 tons recycled.

This grant helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. It is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs.

Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
