FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Vance Lauds State, Community Efforts on Opossum Lake ProjectHARRISBURG – Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York) today thanked state and local officials, along with area residents, for their efforts to fix the Opossum Lake dam spillway. In addition to the $1.5 in state funds from the Capital Budget that Vance secured, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Cumberland County Commissioners, Lower Frankford Township Supervisors and Friends of Opossum Lake Conservancy have committed money to make the Lower Frankford Township dam project a reality. "Today is a bright day in the history of Opossum Lake," Vance said. "This is a good example of how working together state and local officials and general public can make a difference in the community. The increased awareness surround Opossum Lake not only has resulted in solid plans to fix the dam, but has and will improve the area around the lake too. This includes a four-mile long angler’s access trail, picnic pavilion and restrooms." The 59-acre lake was lowered 14 feet in the fall of 2005 after leaks were discovered in the spillway. The leaks could have caused dam failure, which could have resulted in significant downstream flooding and danger. Since an April 2006 public meeting, work has been ongoing to secure the more than $3 million needed to complete the project. Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
