FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Vance Announces Recycling GrantsHARRISBURG – More than $2,000 in Recycling Performance Grants recently were awarded to Dillsburg and Franklintown boroughs, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York). "Recycling benefits not only landfills by reducing trash, but also residents and municipalities through this grant program," Vance said. "It only takes a couple extra seconds to deposit a jar or can into a recycling container rather than the trash. I would encourage everyone to increase their recycling in 2008." The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality's overall recycling rate for calendar year 2006 and the borough's population. Dillsburg Borough was awarded $1,853 based on 138 tons recycled. Franklintown Borough received $450 based on 34 tons recycled. This grant helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. It is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs. Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County. |
