Vance Announces Municipalities Awarded Recycling Grants

HARRISBURG – More than $23,000 in Recycling Performance Grants recently were awarded to Wormleysburg, Shiremanstown and Mt. Holly Springs boroughs and North Middleton Township, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York).

"Residents in each of these municipalities should be applauded for their recycling efforts," Vance said. "According to the Environmental Protection Agency, almost 36 percent of the United State's waste is recycled, which is almost double the rate from15 years ago. While these are good numbers, there is always room for improvement. I encourage everyone to do their part to push this rate higher."

The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality's overall recycling rate for calendar year 2006. Wormleysburg Borough was awarded $2,311 based on 174 tons recycled. Shiremanstown Borough received $2,364 based on 142 tons recycled, while Mt. Holly Springs Borough was awarded $1,982 for 140 tons. North Middleton Township recycled 992 tons for $17,014.

This grant helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. It is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs.

Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
