Vance Announces Three Entities Awarded Grants

HARRISBURG – Almost $85,000 in Recycling Performance Grants recently were awarded to Carlisle and Mechanicsburg boroughs, along with a $15,000 grant to Dickinson College for a water quality event, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York).

"More and more people are becoming cognizant of the easy steps they can take to improve the environment,” Vance said. "These recycling grants and the grant to Dickinson College to host a water quality monitoring conference help keep this important topic in the forefront of residents' minds.”

The Recycling Performance Grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality's population for calendar year 2007. Carlisle Borough was awarded $68,140 based on 4,106 tons recycled. Mechanicsburg received $16,736 based on 934 tons recycled.

This grant helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. It is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs.

Dickinson College's grant will be used to host a water quality monitoring conference for Mid-Atlantic States, within the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 3, for the volunteer monitoring community highlighting partnerships and resources.

Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
