DEP Grants Awarded to Three Municipalities, Vance Says

HARRISBURG – Three different Department of Environmental Protection Grants recently were awarded to East Pennsboro, North Middleton and Upper Frankford townships, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York).

"The Department of Environmental Protection offers a variety of grants to municipalities to encourage environmentally friendly practices and to relieve some of the financial burden," Vance said. "In these tight economic times, it is important that cost does not get in the way of good decision making for the future."

A $500,000 PA Green Energy Works! Combined Heat and Power Projects Grant was awarded to East Pennsboro Township towards expansion of its wastewater treatment plant. Work is expected to begin in early 2011. The grant is available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for combined heat and power projects, which generate power and thermal energy from a single source.

North Middleton Township received a $34,566 Recycling Performance Grant. The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality’s population for calendar year 2007. Township residents recycled 1,488 tons. This grant helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs.

Upper Frankford Township received $363 under the Sewage Facilities Act. The grant will be used to reimburse almost 43 percent of the eligible expenses for performing sewage enforcement provisions of the law.

Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
